deadbeef engineering

Who is deadbeef engineering;

Hi, my name is Toon Van Eyck, I’m an embedded systems engineer with an absolute passion for all things electronic! My goal with deadbeef engineering is to apply my passion, skill and experience to assist you in your engineering challenges.

The word deadbeef is closely related to embedded software development. It’s a word that can be formed using hexadecimal numbers, this means it can be used as a sort of beacon in memory dumps and compiled binaries. This beacon can assist engineers in the development and debugging of software solutions.

With deadbeef engineering I aim to be such a beacon for you.

Portfolio;

Freelance @ Taylor.Solar

Taylor is a startup in the energy sector. I joined their embedded team to further develop an ESP32-based gateway for energy management. One of the neat features I developed during my time there was a method to persist a stack trace during a reset, allowing me to debug and repair already deployed devices.

Freelance @ EldoLED

EldoLED needed a short-term firmware engineer to accelerate the development of their next-generation LED drivers. During my time at EldoLED, I implemented hardware abstraction layers for various ARM peripherals, as well as more generic drivers. I also developed several RTOS threads to enable higher-level functionality.

Freelance @ Xemex

I joined Xemex while their product was transitioning from an energy monitoring to an energy management solution. During this transition, I developed a new software architecture to overcome the shortcomings of their legacy, monitoring-centric approach. I also created a development container for this new architecture to improve reliability across the development team and the CI system.

Payroll @ BePowered

BePowered is a startup focused on energy management systems. At this company, I engineered various hardware and software components, including Type 2 electric vehicle chargers, dynamic load balancers, metering devices, and an embedded Linux-based energy management system.
